The Manimahesh Yatra, known as the “Spiritual Heart of Himachal”, is considered one of the most important pilgrimages in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Countless pilgrims and adventurers will make the pilgrimage every year through the Himalayas with their strong faith as the reason for the pilgrimage. The Lake is found at the foot of the Kailash Peak where Lord Shiva embellishes, so the lake has provided a sacred place for local devotees.

Manimahesh Lake is located 4080 m above sea level, (Pir Panjal) Himalaya range; the Pir Panjal is part of the greater Himalaya range. There is another lake beneath "Kailash Peak" at the base of Mt. Kailash (Kailash means "heavenly peak"). This is thought to be the home of Shiv Ji.


The lake is also said to have been created by the marriage of Shiv Ji and Parvati Ji. Local people think that much of Shiv Ji's meditation took place here.


The sacredness of Mount Kailash


Kailash Peak is a famous mountain in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh; it sits just outside of Manimahesh Lake. Many pilgrims believe that there is a large rock on the Summit of Kailash Peak which looks like a 'Shivling' that is associated with Lord Shiva.


Many people believe that the snowy area at the base of Mount Kailash (Shiva Chaugan) gives the mountain additional religious and spiritual significance.


Many pilgrims believe they can see their own reflection on a clear day at Mount Kailash in the Manimahesh Lake located at the base of the mountain. When they do, they feel very blessed to be at this location (the Manimahesh Yatra).


The body of water found at this location is a natural water source; it is known as a lake.


The Manimahesh Lake is an extremely holy place; it is something that is regarded as being holy, and also has many structures built up around its perimeter.


At this location the pilgrims that visit Manimahesh Lake are able to see Lord Shiva (Chaumukhi) as a statue (immortalization).


This statue is described to be an example of the style of Shikhara (the architectural style). Additionally, the area of the lake is accompanied by a small temple that has domestic brass idols of Goddess Lakshmi made on its site; that are collectively known as Mahishasuramardini.



The Trek Route for Manimahesh Lake.


Trekking routes to Manimahesh Lake are found throughout Himachal Pradesh, and are connected together in completing the pilgrimage walk for each group of pilgrims who are visiting Manimahesh Lake.


For those who live in the region of Lahul/Spiti, they complete their trek utilizing the Kugti Pass to connect themselves to Manimahesh Lake.


Individuals from Mandi/Kangra complete their trek by passing through either Kahwa Pass or Jalsu Pass to arrive at Manimahesh Lake.


On the other hand, the easiest route is followed by the pilgrims who have come from the Chamba district, passing through the areas of Bharmaur and Hadsar.


The pilgrims move forward towards the Manimahesh Lake, which is located in the mountain ranges. Moreover, the altitude of the lake is 145m.

However, the main yatra would take place during the months of August and September, with special emphasis given to the Janmashtami and Radha Ashtami festivals.
