The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek has often been claimed as one of the most beautiful Himalayan treks in India, given its scenic alpine lakes, meadows flowing with flowers, and astonishing high passes. For many trekkers, this is the most beautiful trail they have ever seen in the country, and that is readily understandable as one walks its valleys. Each day unfolds a new scenery, another lake, and fresh colors-the colors that endure in one's memory forever. Nature lovers and adventure seekers, first-time trekkers reasonably fit, get a once-in-a-lifetime experience on this trail.

What makes this trek special is how naturally it marries adventure with beauty. Moving from Sonamarg to Naranag, one crosses quiet forests, rolling meadows, and vast openness that often looks surreal. Of course, the major attractions are seven lakes-Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, Gangabal, and Nundkol. Each lake differs in color, size, and mood, and each one makes the journey feel magical.

Distance, Duration & Difficulty

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is generally done in seven days. The distance covered by the trekkers is approximately 65 to 75 kilometres, depending on the exact route the team follows. This is assessed as a "moderate" difficulty level, which means an ideal trek for beginners, provided they are fit and comfortable walking considerable distances. The highest altitude you will go up to is around 13,800 ft, which happens at Gadsar Pass. At such heights, the air becomes thinner, the temperature drops, and the surroundings grow wilder.

Best Time to Trek

Mid-July to the end of August is regarded as the ideal time to undertake the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. Nature in Kashmir is at its best during this period. During this time, snow from winters and early summer starts to melt and reveals lush green valleys with a plethora of flowers. The meadows seem like nature's own painting, and the lakes shine bright under the open sky.

Daily Altitude Experience

Though this blog focuses on a simple overview, understanding the altitude changes will help trekkers prepare better. Typically, a trek starts from Sonamarg, which is at an altitude of approximately 7,800 ft. From here, one gradually climbs up to Nichnai Pass, then Gadsar Pass, then Satsar, and later the beautiful twin lakes, Gangabal and Nundkol.

  • Nichnai Pass – 11,500 ft
